What Is Jholmal?

Ingredients

• Cow dung — 1 part
• Cow urine — 1 part
• Water — 1 part
• Large plastic drum (60–100 litres)

Method

Mix cow dung, urine, and water in a 1:1:1 ratio in a large drum. Stir thoroughly. Cover the drum (to prevent evaporation and flies) and leave in a warm location. Stir once a week to oxygenate the mixture. After 2–3 weeks of fermentation, it's ready to use. Before applying, dilute at a 1:5 ratio with water (non-drinking water from your irrigation supply).

Jholmal-2: The Powerful Pest-Control Version

Additional Ingredients

• Leaves of bitter, pungent, or resinous plants (neem, artemisia, chinaberry, titepati) — 30 kg
• Cow dung — 5 kg
• Garlic — 2 kg
• Timur (Sichuan pepper) and other pungent spices — a handful
• Cow urine — enough to fill the drum

Method

Chop all plant materials finely — smaller pieces ferment faster and more completely. Layer into the drum with cow dung and garlic. Fill with cow urine. The ammonia in urine accelerates fermentation. Stir weekly for 3 weeks. This version is effective against aphids, whitefly, caterpillars, root rot, and fungal leaf diseases.

Application Guide

• Young / seedling plants: Dilute at 1:7 (one part jholmal to seven parts water), apply at root zone
• Mature crops: Dilute at 1:4, apply weekly
• Pest control: Apply undiluted Jholmal-2 directly to foliage at first sign of infestation
• Frequency: Once per week for maintenance; every 3 days during active pest pressure
