Small-Scale Poultry Farming Guide: A Reliable Income From Your Own Backyard

Why Poultry Farming Is an Easy Business to Start

Poultry farming needs less space and less investment than most other livestock businesses, making it a good option for new farmers. Demand for both eggs and chicken meat stays steady year-round, so income tends to be reliable. You can choose between two main types depending on your goal: broiler (for meat) or layer (for eggs).

Which Type Should You Choose: Broiler or Layer?

  • Broiler: reaches sellable size in just 6-7 weeks, making it a fast-return option for beginners
  • Layer: starts laying eggs at 5-6 months and continues for 1-2 years, better suited for long-term income

Steps to Get Started

Step 1: Build the Coop

Build a coop with good airflow that still protects against rain and strong sun. Each bird needs at least 0.3-0.4 square feet of space. Bedding (straw or wood shavings) on the floor makes cleaning easier and keeps the birds warm.

Step 2: Get Chicks

Buy healthy, active chicks from a reliable hatchery or a nearby poultry farm. Avoid chicks that seem sluggish, have closed eyes, or droopy wings — these are more likely to be unwell.

Step 3: Early Care (First 2 Weeks)

Use a bulb or heater to keep chicks warm — at this age, they can't regulate their own body temperature yet. Feed a high-protein starter feed at this stage.

Feed and Water Management

Feed type should change as birds age — starter feed first, then grower, then finisher (for broilers) or layer feed (for egg-laying birds). Always keep clean, fresh water available, since dirty water spreads disease quickly.

Disease Prevention and Vaccination

  • Newcastle disease: the most dangerous viral disease in poultry, preventable only through regular vaccination
  • Follow a vaccination schedule: use the schedule recommended by your nearest livestock service center
  • Keep the coop clean: change bedding regularly, and quarantine new birds for a few days before mixing them with the rest of the flock

When to Sell

Broilers are ready to sell once they reach 1.5-2 kg, usually around 6-7 weeks. For layers, collect eggs daily and sell at a nearby market or directly to customers.

Market Opportunity

Demand for fresh eggs and chicken stays steady throughout the year. Selling directly to customers through FoodSansar provides a more stable income, less exposed to market price swings.
