Why Winter Vegetables Pay Off
Once the monsoon ends, cauliflower, cabbage, and radish planted in Ashoj-Kartik (September-October) deliver strong yields through Poush-Magh. Demand for these vegetables peaks right around Dashain-Tihar, so timing your planting correctly means hitting the market exactly when prices are best.
Nursery Preparation
Cauliflower and cabbage seeds need 3-4 weeks in a nursery tray or seedbed before transplanting. Mix well-rotted farmyard manure into the nursery soil and water lightly and consistently. Seedlings are ready to transplant to the main field once they have 4-5 true leaves and stand 10-15cm tall. Radish, by contrast, can be sown directly in the field — no nursery step needed.
Planting Time and Spacing
- Cauliflower: plant late Ashoj to early Kartik, spacing 45 x 45 cm
- Cabbage: plant late Ashoj to early Kartik, spacing 45 x 45 cm
- Radish: sow repeatedly from Ashoj through Mangsir, spacing 30 x 10 cm
Soil Preparation and Fertilizer
Plough deeply to loosen the soil. Work in 8-10 quintals of farmyard manure per ropani along with an appropriate NPK mix. Cauliflower and cabbage are prone to "brown heart" — hollow, discoloured cores — when the soil is boron-deficient, so a small amount of borax mixed into the soil ahead of planting helps prevent this.
Irrigation
Water lightly right after transplanting to keep the soil moist while roots establish. Once plants are settled, 1-2 waterings a week is usually enough through winter — but don't let water run short during head/curd formation, since that's when a dry spell shrinks head size the most.
Key Pests and Disease Control
- Diamondback moth (leaf-eating caterpillar): The single biggest threat to cauliflower and cabbage. Control with neem oil spray or yellow sticky traps.
- Aphids: Small sap-sucking insects that cluster on leaves — a soapy water spray controls them effectively.
- Radish leaf spot: Appears in overly humid conditions; spacing plants to allow airflow reduces the risk significantly.
When to Harvest
Harvest cauliflower once the curd is firm, white, and compact — waiting too long causes the curd to loosen and flower. Pick cabbage once heads feel tight and heavy for their size. Radish is ready in just 35-45 days from sowing, while cauliflower and cabbage take 60-90 days to reach harvest.
Market Opportunity
Because these vegetables mature right around Dashain-Tihar, they command strong festival-season prices. Selling directly to customers through FoodSansar keeps the margin a middleman would otherwise take.
